Preschool to kindergarten: what readiness actually means

Why letter recognition is the wrong metric — and what isn't.

Kindergarten readiness has been hijacked by worksheets and flashcards. The skills that actually predict a strong kindergarten year — and a strong third grade after it — are almost all social, emotional, and physical. This guide tells you which skills matter, which don't, and how to evaluate whether your preschool is building them.

What kindergarten teachers actually want

Surveys of K teachers (NAEYC, NIEER) are remarkably consistent. The wish list isn't academic.

Can sit and listen to a short story
Can take turns and wait briefly
Can separate from caregivers calmly
Can use the bathroom independently and wash hands
Can hold a pencil, scissors, glue stick
Can put on a coat and shoes
Knows their full name and parents' first names

What kindergarten teachers don't need

Skills heavily marketed by 'academic prep' programs that K teachers actively de-prioritize.

Reading sight words (they'll teach this — and your child will likely be re-taught using the school's method anyway)
Memorized math facts past counting to 10–20
Writing full sentences
Worksheet stamina

The skills that matter most — and how to spot them being built

Self-regulation and executive function are the strongest predictors of long-term school success. Here's how to see them developing.

Sustained attention: can your child stay with a puzzle / build / drawing for 15+ minutes?
Flexibility: can they shift from one activity to another without melting down?
Working memory: can they follow a 2-step instruction without reminders?
Inhibitory control: can they wait their turn, even when it's hard?
Collaborative play: can they sustain pretend play with another child for 10+ minutes?

Evaluating your preschool through a K-readiness lens

Questions to ask now, in the last preschool year, so the spring isn't a panic.

'How do you build self-regulation specifically?'
'What does a typical day look like in your pre-K room vs. your 3s room?'
'How do you handle the transition meeting with our future K school?'
'Are children expected to do worksheet packets? How long?' (long = a red flag, not a green one)
'Do older children have leadership roles — line leader, snack helper, reading to younger kids?'

The summer before K: what helps, what doesn't

The 8 weeks before kindergarten are higher leverage than you think — for the right things.

Do: practice the routines (lunchbox, backpack, bathroom on your own)
Do: visit the school, walk the route, photograph the playground
Do: read 20 minutes a day together — not 'reading lessons,' just read
Don't: drill flashcards, sight words, or workbooks
Don't: switch sleep schedules or stop nap until 2 weeks before school starts
