What the physical space tells you before anyone says a word. Walk slowly and let your eyes drift to corners and shelves the tour skips.

☐ Wall decor made by adults (laminated, identical) instead of by children

How educators move, speak, and respond to children is more telling than any credential on the wall.

☐ Teachers calling across the room instead of crouching to a child's level
☐ Praise that focuses on the child ('Good girl!') rather than on the act ('You stacked five blocks!')
☐ Adults eating or scrolling phones while children play
☐ No warm, named greeting for kids already in the room
☐ One teacher doing all the talking while the other 'manages' — usually a sign of an under-trained assistant
☐ Visible tension or eye-rolls between staff during the tour
☐ Staff don't know children's names without checking a list
☐ A crying child waits more than 30 seconds before any adult goes to them

Listen for these phrases — they almost always mean something you should ask about directly.

☐ 'The kids love screen time on Fridays'
☐ 'Our ratios meet state minimums' (minimums are floors, not goals)

☐ 'We don't really do parent communication, you can just ask any time' — translation: no system

☐ Director answers every question instead of letting you talk to the lead teacher
☐ The daily schedule on the wall doesn't match what you see happening
☐ All transitions are signaled with the lights flicking off, not a song or warning

Scripts: how to ask about what you saw

Word-for-word phrases that get past the rehearsed tour. Pick one or two — asking all of them turns the visit into a deposition.

Naming what you noticed: 'I noticed the TV in the back room — can you tell me when that's on and what's playing?'
Surfacing turnover: 'Who's the longest-tenured teacher in the infant room, and how long have they been here?'
Pressure-testing discipline: 'A 2-year-old bites another child for the third time this week. Walk me through the next hour.'
Checking real ratios: 'Are floater or break staff counted in the ratio you just quoted me?'
Asking for evidence: 'Can I see the last licensing report, and the parent handbook, before I leave today?'
Closing the loop: 'If we enroll, who's my first call when something goes wrong — and what response time should I expect?'

What to do when you spot one

One red flag isn't a no — it's a question. Two or three in the same visit, and you're seeing a pattern.

Name what you saw out loud, calmly, in the room (not in the car on the way home)
Ask for a second visit, unannounced if possible, at a different time of day
Email after the visit with one specific follow-up — speed and tone of the reply tells you a lot
Talk to a current parent at pick-up — not one the director introduces you to
Trust the gut feeling you had in the parking lot afterwards. It's almost always right.
