Every program will tell you they 'use positive guidance.' Almost none will explain what they actually do when a 2-year-old bites another child for the third time that week. This guide gives you the exact questions, the answers to listen for, and the physical signs in the room that tell you what discipline really looks like there.

The questions to ask the director

These are deliberately specific. Vague questions get vague answers.

'What's your written policy on biting — can I see it?'
'A 3-year-old hits another child. Walk me through the next 15 minutes.'
'How do you support a child who melts down at every transition?'
'When do you call a parent for behavior? When do you ask a child to leave the program?'
'What training have your teachers had in trauma-informed care or conscious discipline?'

What good answers sound like

The vocabulary tells you almost as much as the policy.

'We stay close, we keep the other child safe, we name the feeling, we offer the words.'
'We never use time-out as a punishment — we may use a quiet space with a teacher.'
'We document patterns and meet with parents at the first concern, not the third.'
'We've all done Conscious Discipline / RIE / Pyramid Model training.'
'We assume the behavior is communication — our first question is what need isn't being met.'

What red-flag answers sound like

If you hear any of these phrases, slow down.

'We use a clip-up / clip-down chart.'
'They sit in the thinking chair until they're ready.'
'We don't really have biters in this room.' (every infant/toddler room has biters)
'We tell them to use their words.' (without modeling them)
'If it keeps happening we have to disenroll.' (as the first lever, not the last)

What to look for in the room

Discipline is happening all day, not just in the dramatic moments. Watch the small ones.

A child grabs a toy — does the teacher narrate, redirect, or scold?
Two kids both want the swing — does the teacher solve it for them or coach them through it?
A child is crying — is anyone with them in 30 seconds?
Is there a 'cozy corner' with cushions and books for regulating big feelings?
Are visual emotion charts at child-eye-height, actually being used?
